Interrail youth, senior and child discounts
Short answer: if you are 12–27 on the first day of your pass, a Youth Pass costs about 25% less than the adult price. From 60 it is about 10% less (there is no senior German Rail Pass). The Global Plus Pass is the exception: its youth and senior prices are only about 19% and 8% below the adult price. Children aged 4–11 travel free with a Child Pass, up to 2 per adult, youth or senior pass holder; under-4s need no pass unless they take their own seat or bed. Reservations are a separate cost: every traveller needs one where a train requires it, children included.
The discount on each pass
We compared the youth and senior price with the adult price for every pass length on interrail.com (2nd class). Prices are rounded to whole euros, so the percentage moves slightly between lengths. Interrail's senior page says seniors get "a 10% senior discount on all Interrail Passes"; the Global Plus prices it shows are a smaller discount than that, and the Plus Pass is still marked as a beta product.
| Pass | Shortest pass: adult / youth / senior | Youth discount | Senior discount |
|---|---|---|---|
| Global Pass | 4 days: €283 / €212 / €255 | 24.8–25.1% | 9.9–10.1% |
| Global Plus Pass | 5 days: €417 / €338 / €385 | 18.9–19.8% | 7.7–7.9% |
| France Pass | 3 days: €165 / €124 / €149 | 24.8–25.1% | 9.7–10.1% |
| Italy Pass | 3 days: €165 / €124 / €149 | 24.8–25.1% | 9.7–10.1% |
| Spain Pass | 3 days: €193 / €145 / €174 | 24.8–25.1% | 9.6–9.9% |
| Austria Pass | 3 days: €165 / €124 / €149 | 24.8–25.1% | 9.7–10.1% |
| Benelux Pass | 3 days: €137 / €103 / €123 | 24.8–25.1% | 9.4–10.2% |
| German Rail Pass | 3 days: €223 / €167 / no senior pass | 24.8–25.1% | none (seniors buy the adult pass) |
| Switzerland Pass | 3 days: €193 / €145 / €174 | 24.8–25.1% | 9.6–9.9% |
A detail worth knowing: a 1st-class Youth Pass is not much dearer than a 2nd-class adult one. The 5-day Global Pass costs €309 in 1st class for a youth and €318 in 2nd class for an adult.
The rules behind the discounts
- Your age on the start date counts. If you turn 28 (or 60) during the trip, the pass stays valid. You prove your age with your passport or ID.
- Anyone may use an Adult Pass, whatever their age. Seniors buying a German Rail Pass must buy the adult one.
- Child Passes are free but must be ordered together with the accompanying pass, for the same class and length. You can't add them after paying.
- Who can take children: a traveller aged 18 or over with an Adult, Youth or Senior Pass, up to two children each. A third child needs a paid Youth Pass. The companion does not have to be a family member.
- Children travel in the same class as their companion.
- Babies: children under 4 need no pass and may have to sit on your lap when trains are busy. To reserve a seat for them you need a (free) Child Pass. A bed on a night train is paid separately.
What is not discounted
Interrail says you need reservations for all travellers, including children, and its fee tables show no separate child price for seats, couchettes or sleepers. For a family of two adults and two children on a 5-day Global Pass in 2nd class, the passes cost €636 in total (the children's are free), but a single Frecciarossa leg still costs 4 × €13 = €52 in reservations. The calculator works for one traveller; for a family, multiply the reservation fees yourself. We have not compared operators' own child ticket prices here.
Youth fares on tickets
Operators also discount tickets for young people. On our Florence → Rome sample, Trenitalia offered a FrecciaYOUNG fare of €19 for its Frecciarossa, against a Base fare of €50. So the youth pass discount does not automatically make the pass a better deal for young travellers; compare both sides. We did not check Trenitalia's age limit for FrecciaYOUNG.
