Interrail in Germany vs the Deutschland-Ticket and German Rail Pass

Prices last checked: · Adult, 2nd class

Short answer: Germany is one of the easiest countries to use an Interrail pass in, because ICE and IC trains need no reservation. A Global Pass day (€70.75 on the 4-day pass) is worth spending on a long ICE trip, such as Berlin → Munich, which costs €167.30 as a flexible ticket but €79.99 as a Super Sparpreis bought three weeks ahead. Don't spend pass days on regional trains: the €63 Deutschland-Ticket covers all of them for a calendar month. If your trip is mostly in Germany, the German Rail Pass, which Interrail sells as Germany's One Country Pass, is cheaper per day than the Global Pass.

German Rail Pass prices: the Interrail shop shows exactly the same prices as Deutsche Bahn's German Rail Pass price list (€223 to €507 for 3 to 15 days), so it does not matter where you buy it. Youth (12–27): €167 for 3 days.

Optional ICE seat reservation with any pass€5.50–€6.90
DB fares read in DB's journey planner on 27 Oct 2026, from our Berlin–Munich price guide.

A pass day beats the flexible fare by a long way and roughly matches the cheapest saver fare. The pass gives you the freedom of the Flexpreis for close to the saver price. For a German leg inside a longer European trip that is a good use of a Global Pass day.

Which to use

Reservations to and from Germany

Inside Germany an ICE seat is optional. Some trains across the border are not: Interrail lists required reservations for ICE and TGV Paris – Frankfurt (€19, a special passholder fare), Eurostar Dortmund – Cologne – Brussels – Paris, ECE Frankfurt – Milan, EC Germany – Poland, all night trains, and from 26 June to 31 August the ICE Amsterdam – Berlin / Frankfurt / Munich and Hamburg – Copenhagen trains. EuroCity trains to Italy over the Brenner need a supplement (€10 in 2nd class).
