Interrail and Eurail: is a European rail pass worth it?
A pass buys you travel days. Whether those days are cheap depends on which trains you take, how much their seat reservations cost, and what the same journeys cost as ordinary tickets. Our calculator and guides use Interrail's own prices and fee tables and fares we read on operators' booking pages, each with a date.
Eurail is now Interrail. On 9 September 2026 Eurail became part of the Interrail brand worldwide. People who live outside Europe now buy the same Interrail Pass as Europeans; existing Eurail Passes stay valid. We set the shop's country of residence to Germany, Switzerland and the United States in turn and saw the same euro prices for the Global Pass. The rules that still depend on where you live are below.
Global Pass prices at a glance (2nd class)

Rules that depend on where you live
- If you live in one of the 33 Interrail countries (this includes the UK and Switzerland), your Global Pass works in your own country only for one outbound and one inbound journey, and both use ordinary travel days.
- One Country Passes cannot be used in your own country of residence. A Swiss resident cannot use the Switzerland Pass at home; a German resident cannot use the German Rail Pass.
- The Great Britain and Switzerland Passes are only sold to residents of Europe: the EU plus a list that includes the UK, Switzerland, Norway and Türkiye. Visitors from the US, Canada or Australia need a Global Pass for those countries (or, in Switzerland, the Swiss Travel Pass).
- Your country of residence is where you live on the first day of the pass, not your passport country. If they differ, carry an official residence document.

How we got the numbers
Interrail shows its prices only after the page has loaded in a browser, so we opened each pass page in an ordinary browser, chose each age group and class, and copied the prices with the date. Reservation fees come from Interrail's own fee tables, which it calls "indicative". Ticket fares change with demand, so the ones we quote are samples for named trains and dates, read on eurostar.com and trenitalia.com. Where a site refused us (SNCF Connect returns an error page to our browser), we say so and do not guess. Read how we check prices.
