JR Pass calculator
Add the train journeys you plan in Japan. The calculator prices each one with ordinary tickets, then tries the 7, 14 and 21-day Japan Rail Pass and six regional passes on the best days of your trip, including pairs of passes, and shows the cheapest way to pay.
Every fare comes from an official railway page: JR Central's own route and fare search for the Shinkansen and JR West lines, JR East's Narita Express page, Tokyo Monorail and the JR Miyajima ferry. The full fare table below lists the source and travel date for each journey.
How the calculator works
- Tickets: the regular one-way fare (base fare plus limited-express charge) for each journey, for the seat and train type you chose. If you add two Narita Express rides, they are priced as an N’EX TOKYO Round Trip Ticket (¥5,200), which is cheaper than two singles.
- Japan Rail Pass: ¥50,000, ¥80,000 or ¥100,000 for 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days when bought on the official site; ¥53,000, ¥84,000 and ¥105,000 from an overseas agency since 1 October 2026. The calculator slides the pass across your trip to cover the most expensive days, and prices the journeys outside it as tickets.
- Nozomi and Mizuho: the pass does not cover them. Pass holders can buy a NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket for each ride (for example ¥4,960 Tokyo–Kyoto). If you pick Nozomi, the calculator adds it; pick Hikari to see the pass without it.
- Regional passes: Kansai Mini, Kansai WIDE, Kansai-Hiroshima, Kansai-Hokuriku, JR-WEST All Area and JR EAST PASS (5 or 10 days), each placed on its best days. Journeys outside a pass's area are priced as tickets. Where a pass covers a journey only if you take a JR conventional line instead of the Tokaido Shinkansen (Kyoto to Shin-Osaka, Himeji or Hiroshima), the journey counts as covered and the result says so.
- Two passes: the calculator also tries pairs of passes that do not overlap, such as JR EAST PASS for Tokyo and Nagano and then a Kansai pass. It shows the pair only when it beats every single option.
What it leaves out: discount tickets such as smartEX (about ¥200 less than the regular Tokyo–Shin-Osaka Nozomi fare), seasonal reserved-seat prices (±¥200 to ¥400 per limited-express ticket), subways and private railways, and the ¥100 Miyajima visitor tax. Fares are for travel on regular-season days; see the table for dates.
Fare table: every journey in the calculator
One adult, one way, regular season. The first three price columns are for the cheapest train type that runs (Hikari, Sakura or Kodama on the Shinkansen); "Nozomi reserved" is the fastest train. Child fares are half the base fare and half the limited-express charge, rounded down to 10 yen (JR's rule); the Green Car charge itself is not halved.
