Tokyo to Kyoto and Osaka by Shinkansen: the cost

Prices last checked: · Fares from JR Central's official access search for 10 Nov 2026, a regular-season day

Short answer: one adult, one way, regular season: Tokyo to Kyoto is ¥13,320 in a non-reserved seat, ¥13,850 reserved on a Hikari and ¥14,170 reserved on a Nozomi. Tokyo to Shin-Osaka is ¥13,870, ¥14,400 and ¥14,720. A return Tokyo–Kyoto on a Hikari (¥27,700) is 55% of the ¥50,000 7-day Japan Rail Pass, so the round trip alone never justifies the pass.

Regular season, base fare plus Shinkansen charge, from JR Central's search for 10 Nov 2026. Times are for the sampled trains (Hikari 639 and Nozomi from Tokyo around 10:00); other departures differ by a few minutes. Child = age 6 to 11.

How the price is built, Tokyo to Kyoto: base fare ¥8,360 for the distance, plus a Shinkansen charge of ¥5,490 for a Hikari reserved seat or ¥5,810 for a Nozomi. A non-reserved seat costs ¥13,320 on either train: JR Central charges the same non-reserved price for Nozomi and Hikari. Children pay half the fare and half the charge, rounded down to 10 yen; in Green Car the Green part is not halved, which is why a child's Green seat (¥12,060 on a Hikari) costs much more than half the adult price.

Seasons: why your price may differ by ¥200

Reserved and Green seats change price by season; non-reserved seats do not. JR Central's rule page lists four levels: off-peak (−¥200), regular, peak (+¥200) and busiest (+¥400) per Shinkansen ticket, against the regular price above. On Friday 30 Oct 2026, a peak day, the same search returned ¥14,370 for a Nozomi reserved seat to Kyoto and ¥14,050 on a Hikari, ¥200 more than on 10 Nov 2026; the non-reserved price was ¥13,320 on both days.

On these dates every Nozomi seat is reserved (no non-reserved cars), according to JR Central: 21 Nov 2026 to 23 Nov 2026; 25 Dec 2026 to 5 Jan 2027; 9 Jan 2027 to 11 Jan 2027; 20 Mar 2027 to 22 Mar 2027. Hikari and Kodama keep their non-reserved cars, which JR Central warns may be overcrowded. It recommends booking a reserved seat in advance for these periods.

Buying online: smartEX

JR Central's smartEX app and website sell the same trains slightly cheaper. Its comparison page gives Tokyo – Shin-Osaka at ¥14,520 for a regular-season reserved Nozomi seat, ¥200 below the ¥14,720 station price. Early-booking smartEX fares can be lower still, but they have limited seats and conditions, so we do not use them in our comparisons.

Kyoto to Osaka

The two cities are 15 minutes apart by Shinkansen (Kyoto to Shin-Osaka, ¥1,450 non-reserved), but the JR Special Rapid from Kyoto to Osaka station takes 28 minutes for ¥580 and arrives in the city centre. Shin-Osaka is one stop north of Osaka on the JR Kyoto Line. We did not get a reserved-seat price for the Kyoto–Shin-Osaka Shinkansen from the fare search, so it is left out.
