Is the JR Pass still worth it?
Short answer: for most first trips, no. A 7-day pass costs ¥50,000 online (¥53,000 from an overseas agency since 1 October 2026). That is more than a Tokyo–Kyoto–Hiroshima–Tokyo loop costs in tickets unless you squeeze it into one week. The pass still wins when you ride long Shinkansen legs on most days of a 7 or 14-day window, for example Tokyo to Fukuoka and Kagoshima. In western Japan, a JR West regional pass usually beats it by a wide margin.
We priced five itineraries journey by journey with the regular fares JR Central's own search returned for regular-season days, and slid each pass across the trip to find its best start day. The same numbers drive the JR Pass calculator, so you can change any of these trips and see the result.
What the pass costs now
| Pass | Online (official site) | Overseas agency, since 1 Oct 2026 | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7-day, ordinary, adult | ¥50,000 | ¥53,000 | +¥3,000 |
| 14-day, ordinary, adult | ¥80,000 | ¥84,000 | +¥4,000 |
| 21-day, ordinary, adult | ¥100,000 | ¥105,000 | +¥5,000 |
| 7-day, Green, adult | ¥70,000 | ¥74,000 | +¥4,000 |
| 14-day, Green, adult | ¥110,000 | ¥116,000 | +¥6,000 |
| 21-day, Green, adult | ¥140,000 | ¥147,000 | +¥7,000 |
| 7-day, ordinary, child (6–11) | ¥25,000 | ¥27,000 | +¥2,000 |
| 14-day, ordinary, child (6–11) | ¥40,000 | ¥42,000 | +¥2,000 |
| 21-day, ordinary, child (6–11) | ¥50,000 | ¥53,000 | +¥3,000 |
So the first saving is free: if you buy a pass at all, buy it on the official site, japanrailpass.net. It also lets you reserve seats online before you collect the pass. Only buy from an agency if you need a paper exchange order, for example as a gift.
The break-even: how much Shinkansen fits in ¥50,000
| Return trip within the 7 days | Tickets | Share of the 7-day pass |
|---|---|---|
| Tokyo ↔ Kyoto return (Nozomi, reserved) | ¥28,340 | 57% |
| Tokyo ↔ Hiroshima return (Nozomi, reserved) | ¥39,520 | 79% |
| Tokyo ↔ Hakata return (Hikari/Sakura, reserved) | ¥45,500 | 91% |
| Tokyo ↔ Hakata return (Nozomi, reserved) | ¥47,620 | 95% |
A return trip from Tokyo to Kyoto covers only 57% of the pass. Even a return to Hiroshima leaves about ¥10,480 of the pass unused, which is more than the Kyoto–Hiroshima and Narita legs of a typical trip cost. Local trains in Kyoto or Osaka add little: Kyoto to Nara is ¥720 each way.
Trip 1: Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima, back to Tokyo in 10 days
The classic first trip: land at Narita, three nights in Tokyo, Kyoto with a day in Nara, Hiroshima with Miyajima, and the train back to Tokyo for the flight home. Reserved seats on Hikari and Sakura trains.
| Day | Journey (one way) | Tickets | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Narita Airport – Tokyo (Narita Express) (half of an N’EX TOKYO Round Trip Ticket) | ¥2,600 | JR East |
| 3 | Tokyo – Kyoto | ¥13,850 | JR Central search, 10 Nov 2026 |
| 4 | Kyoto – Nara | ¥720 | JR Central search, 30 Oct 2026 |
| 4 | Kyoto – Nara | ¥720 | JR Central search, 30 Oct 2026 |
| 6 | Kyoto – Hiroshima | ¥11,300 | JR Central search, 10 Nov 2026 |
| 7 | Miyajimaguchi – Miyajima (JR ferry) | ¥200 | JR West Miyajima Ferry |
| 7 | Miyajimaguchi – Miyajima (JR ferry) | ¥200 | JR West Miyajima Ferry |
| 8 | Tokyo – Hiroshima | ¥18,910 | JR Central search, 10 Nov 2026 |
| 10 | Narita Airport – Tokyo (Narita Express) (half of an N’EX TOKYO Round Trip Ticket) | ¥2,600 | JR East |
Prices for 1 adult, reserved seats, Shinkansen: Hikari, Sakura or Kodama. Regular-season fares.
| Option | Pass valid on days | Total | vs tickets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual tickets | – | ¥51,100 | – |
| 7-day Japan Rail Pass | 2–8 | ¥55,200 | +¥4,100 |
Verdict: tickets. Tickets cost ¥51,100. The best 7-day window (days 2–8) still leaves the Narita rides outside, so the pass route totals ¥55,200. The trip is simply too spread out for one week of pass.
Trip 2: the same route squeezed into 7 days
| Day | Journey (one way) | Tickets | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Narita Airport – Tokyo (Narita Express) (half of an N’EX TOKYO Round Trip Ticket) | ¥2,600 | JR East |
| 2 | Tokyo – Kyoto | ¥13,850 | JR Central search, 10 Nov 2026 |
| 3 | Kyoto – Nara | ¥720 | JR Central search, 30 Oct 2026 |
| 3 | Kyoto – Nara | ¥720 | JR Central search, 30 Oct 2026 |
| 5 | Kyoto – Hiroshima | ¥11,300 | JR Central search, 10 Nov 2026 |
| 5 | Miyajimaguchi – Miyajima (JR ferry) | ¥200 | JR West Miyajima Ferry |
| 5 | Miyajimaguchi – Miyajima (JR ferry) | ¥200 | JR West Miyajima Ferry |
| 7 | Tokyo – Hiroshima | ¥18,910 | JR Central search, 10 Nov 2026 |
| 7 | Narita Airport – Tokyo (Narita Express) (half of an N’EX TOKYO Round Trip Ticket) | ¥2,600 | JR East |
Prices for 1 adult, reserved seats, Shinkansen: Hikari, Sakura or Kodama. Regular-season fares.
| Option | Pass valid on days | Total | vs tickets |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7-day Japan Rail Pass | 1–7 | ¥50,000 | −¥1,100 |
| Individual tickets | – | ¥51,100 | – |
Verdict: a narrow pass win, with conditions. Bought online, the 7-day pass (¥50,000) beats tickets (¥51,100) by ¥1,100. Three things erase that:
- Buying from an agency: ¥53,000, ¥1,900 more than tickets.
- Wanting Nozomi trains: pass holders pay a NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket for each ride. On this trip that is ¥15,630 extra, taking the pass route to ¥65,630 against ¥52,910 for Nozomi tickets. If you want Nozomi, don't buy the pass.
- Choosing non-reserved seats: tickets get cheaper (non-reserved is about ¥500 less per Shinkansen ride) and the gap closes further.
For a family of two adults and two children aged 6–11 the result is the same in proportion: tickets ¥153,280, 7-day passes ¥150,000.
Trip 3: Tokyo to Kyoto, flying home from Osaka (Kansai Airport)
Many first trips are one-way: arrive in Tokyo, leave from Kansai Airport. Day trips to Nara and Fushimi Inari from Kyoto.
| Day | Journey (one way) | Tickets | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Narita Airport – Tokyo (Narita Express) | ¥3,140 | JR East |
| 4 | Tokyo – Kyoto | ¥13,850 | JR Central search, 10 Nov 2026 |
| 5 | Kyoto – Nara | ¥720 | JR Central search, 30 Oct 2026 |
| 5 | Kyoto – Nara | ¥720 | JR Central search, 30 Oct 2026 |
| 6 | Kyoto – Inari (Fushimi Inari) | ¥150 | JR Central search, 30 Oct 2026 |
| 6 | Kyoto – Inari (Fushimi Inari) | ¥150 | JR Central search, 30 Oct 2026 |
| 7 | Kansai Airport – Kyoto | ¥3,590 | JR Central search, 10 Nov 2026 |
Prices for 1 adult, reserved seats, Shinkansen: Hikari, Sakura or Kodama. Regular-season fares.
| Option | Pass valid on days | Total | vs tickets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kansai Mini Pass | 5–7 | ¥21,720 | −¥600 |
| Individual tickets | – | ¥22,320 | – |
| 7-day Japan Rail Pass | 1–7 | ¥50,000 | +¥27,680 |
Verdict: tickets, by a long way. The whole trip costs ¥22,320 in tickets, well under half the 7-day pass. The Kansai Mini Pass trims a little more if your Kansai days line up with its 3 days. More in Kansai day trips by train.
Trip 4: Tokyo to Kagoshima and back in 7 days
Long Shinkansen days are where the national pass earns its money: Tokyo to Kyoto, on to Hiroshima, Fukuoka (Hakata) and Kagoshima, then the long ride back from Hakata to Tokyo.
| Day | Journey (one way) | Tickets | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Narita Airport – Tokyo (Narita Express) | ¥3,140 | JR East |
| 2 | Tokyo – Kyoto | ¥13,850 | JR Central search, 10 Nov 2026 |
| 4 | Kyoto – Hiroshima | ¥11,300 | JR Central search, 10 Nov 2026 |
| 5 | Hiroshima – Hakata (Fukuoka) | ¥9,100 | JR Central search, 10 Nov 2026 |
| 6 | Hakata (Fukuoka) – Kagoshima-Chuo | ¥11,950 | JR Central search, 10 Nov 2026 |
| 7 | Tokyo – Hakata (Fukuoka) | ¥22,750 | JR Central search, 10 Nov 2026 |
Prices for 1 adult, reserved seats, Shinkansen: Hikari, Sakura or Kodama. Regular-season fares.
| Option | Pass valid on days | Total | vs tickets |
|---|---|---|---|
| 7-day Japan Rail Pass | 1–7 | ¥50,000 | −¥22,090 |
| Individual tickets | – | ¥72,090 | – |
Verdict: the 7-day pass. Tickets cost ¥72,090; the pass saves ¥22,090. Even with NOZOMI MIZUHO Tickets on every Nozomi and Mizuho ride, the pass route (¥67,270) still beats Nozomi tickets (¥74,110).
Trip 5: a 14-day loop with Kanazawa, Kyoto, Himeji, Hiroshima and Fukuoka
| Day | Journey (one way) | Tickets | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Narita Airport – Tokyo (Narita Express) | ¥3,140 | JR East |
| 4 | Tokyo – Kanazawa | ¥14,600 | JR Central search, 30 Oct 2026 |
| 6 | Kyoto – Kanazawa | ¥7,720 | JR Central search, 30 Oct 2026 |
| 8 | Kyoto – Nara | ¥720 | JR Central search, 30 Oct 2026 |
| 8 | Kyoto – Nara | ¥720 | JR Central search, 30 Oct 2026 |

| 9 | Kyoto – Himeji | ¥5,270 | JR Central search, 10 Nov 2026 |
| 10 | Kyoto – Hiroshima | ¥11,300 | JR Central search, 10 Nov 2026 |
| 11 | Miyajimaguchi – Miyajima (JR ferry) | ¥200 | JR West Miyajima Ferry |
| 11 | Miyajimaguchi – Miyajima (JR ferry) | ¥200 | JR West Miyajima Ferry |
| 12 | Hiroshima – Hakata (Fukuoka) | ¥9,100 | JR Central search, 10 Nov 2026 |
| 14 | Tokyo – Hakata (Fukuoka) | ¥22,750 | JR Central search, 10 Nov 2026 |
Prices for 1 adult, reserved seats, Shinkansen: Hikari, Sakura or Kodama. Regular-season fares.
| Option | Pass valid on days | Total | vs tickets |
|---|---|---|---|
| JR-WEST All Area Pass | 6–12 | ¥66,490 | −¥14,500 |
| Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass | 7–11 | ¥74,310 | −¥6,680 |
| 7-day Japan Rail Pass | 8–14 | ¥75,460 | −¥5,530 |
| 14-day Japan Rail Pass | 1–14 | ¥80,000 | −¥990 |
| Kansai-Hokuriku Area Pass | 3–9 | ¥80,290 | −¥700 |
| Individual tickets | – | ¥80,990 | – |
Verdict: JR West's pass, not the national pass. Tickets cost ¥80,990. The 14-day Japan Rail Pass covers everything for ¥80,000, but the 7-day JR-WEST All Area Pass (¥26,000) covers the middle week from Kanazawa to Fukuoka and brings the total to ¥66,490 with tickets for the Tokyo legs. See JR Pass vs regional passes.
When the JR Pass is still worth it
- You cover two or more long Shinkansen legs (Tokyo to Hiroshima or further) inside one 7-day window, or travel almost every day of a 14 or 21-day pass.
- You are happy with Hikari, Sakura and Kodama trains. The pass covers reserved seats on them at no extra cost.
- You go to Tohoku or Hokkaido as well as western Japan in the same window: no regional pass covers both.
- You buy online, not from an agency.
When it is not
- Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka only, even with a return to Tokyo.
- Most of your travel is in western Japan: a JR West pass covers Osaka to Hiroshima, Kanazawa or Fukuoka for ¥17,000 to ¥26,000.
- You want the fastest trains: the NOZOMI MIZUHO Ticket adds ¥4,960 on Tokyo–Kyoto and ¥6,500 on Tokyo–Hiroshima, each way.
Eligibility: the Japan Rail Pass is for foreign tourists entering Japan as a "Temporary Visitor" (and some Japanese nationals living abroad). If you use the automated immigration gates, ask for the Temporary Visitor stamp or sticker: you cannot collect the pass without it.
How we priced these trips
Fares are the regular one-way fare (base fare plus limited-express charge) that JR Central's official access search returned for trains around 10:00 on 10 November 2026 (Tokaido, Sanyo, Kyushu Shinkansen and JR West lines) and 30 October 2026 (Hokuriku Shinkansen, which follows JR East's season calendar). Both are regular-season days in those calendars; peak days cost ¥200 to ¥400 more per reserved seat. Narita Express is half the round-trip fare JR East publishes. Every journey has its own source link in the tables. The full claim log is published with the site's fact-check files.
