Kansai day trips by train: what they cost

Short answer: JR day trips around Kyoto and Osaka are cheap: Kyoto to Nara is ¥720 each way, Fushimi Inari ¥150, Arashiyama ¥240. The 3-day Kansai Mini Pass (¥3,000) only pays off if you pack in Nara, Osaka and Arashiyama within 3 days (about ¥3,080 in tickets) or ride HARUKA to the airport on one of them. With Himeji in the plan, the 5-day Kansai WIDE Area Pass (¥12,000) is worth a look. Don't buy a 7-day Japan Rail Pass for Kansai alone.

Day-trip fares

Regular fares. Local and rapid trains have no seat charge. The times are for the sampled trains: Miyakoji Rapid to Nara, Special Rapid to Osaka, Yamatoji Rapid from Osaka to Nara, Hikari or Sakura to Himeji, HARUKA 16 from the airport.

Kyoto to Himeji also runs on the JR Special Rapid along the JR Kyoto and Kobe lines, slower but without the Shinkansen charge. We did not record that fare from an official page, so the table only shows the Shinkansen. The Fushimi Inari shrine is right outside JR Inari station; Arashiyama's bamboo grove is a walk from Saga-Arashiyama.

The Kansai passes now

JR West stopped selling the Kansai Area Pass on 30 September 2026. Two passes are left for a Kansai-only stay:

Kansai Mini Pass, 3 days, ¥3,000 (child ¥1,500): rapid and local JR West trains around Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe and Nara, including the Kansai-Airport Rapid Service. HARUKA and other limited expresses need a separate limited-express ticket; no Shinkansen.
Kansai WIDE Area Pass, 5 days, ¥12,000 (child ¥6,000): adds HARUKA, the Sanyo Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Okayama (Himeji is on the way) and limited expresses such as KUROSHIO and KONOTORI out to Shirahama, Kinosaki Onsen, Amanohashidate, Tottori and Takamatsu. Not the Tokaido Shinkansen from Kyoto to Shin-Osaka.

Both are for foreign visitors with Temporary Visitor status, and run on consecutive days. Both are sold outside Japan as an e-ticket you exchange at a JR West station; the WIDE pass is also sold on JR-WEST ONLINE TRAIN RESERVATION. Children aged 1 to 5 travel free with a pass holder (up to two per adult or child pass), according to JR West.

Kansai Mini Pass, just. ¥4,730 against ¥5,810 in tickets. The pass does not include HARUKA, so you pay its limited-express charge (¥1,730 for a reserved seat) on top; the slower Kansai-Airport Rapid needs no extra ticket but means a change on the way to Kyoto. Without the airport ride on day 1, tickets are cheaper.

Kansai WIDE Area Pass. ¥12,000 covers both airport rides on HARUKA and the Shinkansen to Himeji; tickets come to ¥16,160. Without Himeji, the airport HARUKA rides plus Kyoto and Nara cost less than the pass.

Quick rule

Add up your JR rides for the three busiest consecutive days. Above ¥3,000 (count only the base fare for HARUKA, since the Mini Pass does not cover the express charge), the Kansai Mini Pass saves money. Above ¥12,000 over five days, take the WIDE pass. Most Kyoto sightseeing is by bus, subway or the private Keihan and Hankyu lines, which none of these passes cover. The calculator does the sums for you.
