Is the Deutschland-Ticket worth it for tourists?
What you get for €63
- Unlimited 2nd-class travel on all local and regional public transport in Germany: RB, RE and S-Bahn trains, U-Bahn, trams and buses. A ticket bought in Munich works in Frankfurt or Berlin too.
- Not ICE, IC or EC trains, the RE trains run by DB Fernverkehr, FlixTrain, or transport run mainly for tourists or as heritage lines. There is no 1st-class version.
- It is personal. You cannot take anyone along, and children aged 6 and over need their own ticket. Under-6s travel free.
- DB sells it only as a subscription: "No, you can only purchase the Deutschland-Ticket as a subscription."
The calendar-month rule and the 10th
The ticket "is valid from the first day of each calendar month until 3:00 am on the first day of the following month". You can buy it in the middle of a month, but DB's German help page says it always applies for the full calendar month, and the monthly price and notice period stay the same. Cancellation works like this:
- Cancel by the 10th of a month, and the subscription ends on the last day of that month.
- Cancel after the 10th, and it ends on the last day of the following month. In DB's words (our translation from German): if you buy after the 10th of the month, you can only cancel to the end of the next month, and you pay for both months in full.
| Your trip | You buy and cancel on | You pay for | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3–12 Nov 2026 | 3 Nov | Nov 2026 | €63 |
| 14–23 Nov 2026 | 14 Nov (on arrival) | Nov 2026 + Dec 2026 | €126 |
| 14–23 Nov 2026 | 1 Nov, before you fly | Nov 2026 | €63 |
| 28 Nov – 2 Dec 2026 | 28 Nov | Nov 2026 + Dec 2026 | €126 |
| 20–31 Jan 2027 | 5 Jan | Jan 2027 | €66.80 |
The practical rule: buy it online in the first ten days of the month your trip starts, and cancel it straight away in the DB Navigator app ("Cancel subscription") or DB's Aboportal. Cancelling does not stop the ticket working for the month you paid for. A refund is only possible before the first day of validity.
The payment catch: direct debit
DB's German help page is blunt (our translation): the Deutschland-Ticket can only be paid by direct debit. To pay by SEPA direct debit with DB you need a DB customer account, must be 18 or over, and your bank must be based in the SEPA area. DB also runs a credit check before it accepts a direct-debit subscription. At a DB Travel Centre you can pay the first month in cash or by card, but you still have to give direct-debit details for later months. So visitors with a bank account in a SEPA country can buy it online from DB; visitors without one cannot buy it in DB's online shop.
Other transport companies sell the Deutschland-Ticket too, and their payment options differ. We have not checked them, so confirm the payment method before relying on one.
How many days of city travel does it take?
| City | Day ticket | Deutschland-Ticket is cheaper from |
|---|---|---|
| Berlin, 24-hour ticket AB (2026) | €11.20 | 6 days in one calendar month |
| Berlin, 24-hour ticket AB (from 1 Jan 2027) | €11.50 | 6 days |
| Munich, single-day ticket zone M (2026) | €10.10 | 7 days |
One regional day trip changes the maths quickly. A Bayern-Ticket for Munich–Neuschwanstein costs €34, so a week in Munich with one castle day already costs more in day tickets than one Deutschland-Ticket.
Three worked trips
1. Berlin, then Munich: 14–23 November 2026
Three days of city travel in Berlin, the ICE to Munich on day 4 (Sparpreis €88.99 on Tue, 17 Nov 2026, 09:37, read in DB's planner), four city days in Munich and a Neuschwanstein day trip on a Bayern-Ticket.
| Option | Total |
|---|---|
| Day tickets and the saver fare | €196.99 |
| Deutschland-Ticket bought by 10 November + saver fare | €151.99 |
| Same, plus a trial BahnCard 25 for the ICE | €149.64 |
| Deutschland-Ticket bought on arrival, 14 November (two months) | €214.99 |
Bought in time, the Deutschland-Ticket saves €45. Bought on arrival it costs €18 more than day tickets. The trial BahnCard saves only €2.35 on one saver fare, which is hardly worth the cancellation admin.
2. A week in Munich: 12–18 January 2027
An Airport-City-Day-Ticket on arrival (€17.50), five single-day tickets for zone M (€50.50) and a Bayern-Ticket to Füssen (€34) add up to €102. One Deutschland-Ticket for January costs €66.80 and covers all of it, including the airport S-Bahn and the castle bus from Füssen. Saving: €35.20. This assumes MVV keeps its 2026 day-ticket prices in 2027, which we could not check.
3. Five days in Berlin: 28 November – 2 December 2026
Five 24-hour tickets cost €56. The Deutschland-Ticket would cost €126 because the trip touches two calendar months. Even inside one month, five days (€56) is less than €63. Verdict: skip it.
Groups and families
The Deutschland-Ticket cannot be shared. Germany's regional day tickets can: the Bayern-Ticket costs €34 for one person and €44 for two, and up to three children aged 6–14 travel free on it. DB's nationwide Quer-durchs-Land-Ticket costs €51 for one and €63 for two. For a couple doing two day trips in a month, two Deutschland-Tickets (€126) cost more than two Bayern-Tickets for two (€88) unless they also use a lot of city transport. On weekdays the Bayern-Ticket is valid only from 9:00.
The 1 January 2027 price rise
DB: "From 1 January 2027, the Deutschland-Ticket will cost EUR 66.80 per month." Existing subscribers have to agree to the new price and fare terms by 30 November 2026, or their subscription ends on 31 December 2026. If you bought on or after 15 October 2026, the new terms were part of your order and you do not need to do anything. For a visitor this changes little: a January trip costs €3.80 more than a December one.
