Trial BahnCard 25 for tourists: worth it?

Prices last checked: · DB says BahnCard prices stay the same at the 13 December 2026 timetable change

Short answer: The trial BahnCard 25 costs €19.90 and takes 25% off DB's saver and Flexpreis tickets for three months, so it pays for itself once you spend more than €79.60 on those tickets. One Berlin–Munich Sparpreis is about enough; two long ICE trips clearly are. The catch: unless you cancel at least four weeks before the three months end, it becomes a one-year BahnCard subscription. Cancel it the day you buy it. The trial BahnCard 50 (€76.90) only makes sense if you buy Flexpreis tickets worth more than €228.

Source: DB trial BahnCard pages, checked 2026-10-27. For comparison, the normal one-year BahnCard 25 costs €62.90 and the BahnCard 50 €244 (ages 27–64; under 27s get the My BahnCard 25 for €39.90 a year).

The discount does not apply to the paid City-Ticket add-on of saver fares. In DB's planner the BahnCard also took 25% (BahnCard 25) or 50% (BahnCard 50) off a regional single ticket from Munich to Füssen (€40.20 became €30.15 and €20.10), but not off the Bayern-Ticket day ticket. The digital card can be used straight away in the DB Navigator app.

Read in DB's journey planner (int.bahn.de) on 27 Oct 2026 for the trains shown. "–" means we did not read that price. Saver prices change with demand.

On the Berlin–Munich Sparpreis the trial BahnCard 25 saves €22.25, which is €2.35 more than the card costs. On the Flexpreis it saves €41.85, and the trial BahnCard 50 saves €83.65. A short trip like Frankfurt Airport–Heidelberg saves only a few euros either way.

Break-even points

If you mainly use regional trains, the Deutschland-Ticket is usually the better buy. The two combine well: the Deutschland-Ticket for local travel, the trial BahnCard 25 for one or two ICE trips. The calculator prices that combination.

The auto-renewal trap, and how to avoid it

DB: "If you do not cancel your trial BahnCard 25, it automatically becomes an annual subscription with a minimum contract period of one year." The cancellation deadline is four weeks before the end of the three months, so in practice you have about two months. The safest approach for a visitor:

  1. Buy the trial card in your DB account (bahn.de or the DB Navigator app), so it is linked to you.
  2. Straight away, go to "BahnCard" → "Options" in your account and choose "Cancel BahnCard", if DB offers it. DB's page also lists a contact form and a postal address (BahnCard Service, 60643 Frankfurt).
  3. Keep the cancellation confirmation. The card stays valid until the end of its three months.

DB's own pages are not fully consistent about notice periods: the normal BahnCard 25 page says both "4 weeks" and "six weeks" before the end of the term. For the trial cards, DB states four weeks. Cancelling on the day of purchase avoids the question.
