Munich to Neuschwanstein by train: what it costs

Prices last checked: · Fares read in DB's planner on 27 Oct 2026 for 17 Nov 2026 and 21 Jan 2027 · adult, 2nd class

Short answer: Take a regional train to Füssen (about 2 hours) and bus 73 or 78 to Hohenschwangau (about 15 minutes). For one person the simplest cheap ticket is the Bayern-Ticket at €34: it covers the train both ways and the castle bus, but only from 9:00 on weekdays. Two single tickets cost €80.40 before the bus. If you already have a Deutschland-Ticket, the whole trip costs nothing extra. Groups pay little more: €44 for two, €74 for five. Castle entry is €21 plus a €2.50 online booking fee; under-18s go in free.

DB journey planner, read on 27 Oct 2026. Trains before 9:00 on weekdays were offered only the Normalpreis single (€40.20), because the day tickets start at 9:00. With a BahnCard the single fell to €30.15 (BahnCard 25) or €20.10 (BahnCard 50); the Bayern-Ticket price did not change.

Bus: two single tickets at €3 on RVA lines 73/78 (2026 fares). The return train fare is two singles; we read the single fare in DB's planner.

German Rail Pass holders use one travel day for this trip and pay the bus separately (€3 a ride, or €8.90 for a day ticket). That is poor value unless the same day also includes a long journey. Guest-card holders: DB Regio Bus says the KönigsCard and the Füssen guest card (FüssenCard) let you ride the castle buses free.

Bayern-Ticket 2nd class, bought online or at a machine (DB). Up to three children aged 6–14 travel free on it; under-6s are always free.

DB's English page lists €55 for three people while its German page lists €54; we show the German figure, which fits the pattern of €10 for each extra person. A Deutschland-Ticket is personal and cannot be shared, so for two or more people on a single day trip the Bayern-Ticket is cheaper than buying Deutschland-Tickets.

Verdict

For one adult on a single trip: the Bayern-Ticket, taking a train after 9:00. If you will spend a week or more using local transport in Munich, the Deutschland-Ticket covers this trip as well. For a couple or family, a group Bayern-Ticket is hard to beat.
