Frankfurt Airport to Heidelberg: ICE or regional train?

Short answer: The ICE from the long-distance station (Frankfurt(M) Flughafen Fernbf) takes about an hour, direct or with one change. Saver fares started at €17.99 and the Flexpreis was €28.90–€29.50. Regional trains take about two hours with one or two changes and cost €20.60–€25 as a single ticket, or nothing extra with a Deutschland-Ticket. Without a Deutschland-Ticket, an ICE saver fare costs about the same as the regional single and saves about an hour.

The regional journeys took 2h 9min and 1h 55min, against 1h 3min on the direct ICE 217. With luggage after a long flight, the changes matter as much as the time.

Which ticket?

You have, or will buy, a Deutschland-Ticket for the month: take the regional trains if you have time; they cost nothing extra. The ICE needs a separate ticket even if you hold the Deutschland-Ticket.
No Deutschland-Ticket: book an ICE saver fare for your train. If your flight might be late, the Flexpreis (€28.90–€29.50) lets you take any train that day.
German Rail Pass: this short trip uses a whole travel day. Only worth it if you continue further the same day.
