Worked example: one week, Frankfurt to Berlin, November 2026
Fly into Frankfurt on Tue, 17 Nov 2026, two nights in Heidelberg, four in Munich with a Neuschwanstein day trip on a Bayern-Ticket (€34), three days of Munich city transport (€10.10 a day), then to Berlin on day 7 and fly home. ICE fares are the Sparpreis and Flexpreis DB's planner showed on 27 Oct 2026:
| Leg | Train | Sparpreis | Flexpreis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1: Frankfurt Airport → Heidelberg | Tue, 17 Nov 2026 11:01–12:04 ICE 217 | €21.99 | €29.50 |

If you book saver fares ahead

| Deutschland-Ticket + saver fares Deutschland-Ticket, 1 month (2026-11: €63) €63 + ICE/IC saver fares €144.97 | €207.97 |
| No card: saver fares ICE/IC saver fares €144.97 + Regional trains €34 + City day tickets €30.30 | €209.27 |
| German Rail Pass Flexi, 4 days German Rail Pass €254 + City day tickets €30.30 | €284.30 |
The Deutschland-Ticket barely beats day tickets here (€1.30 less), because the trip has only one regional day trip and three city days. Adding a trial BahnCard 25 for the three ICE legs saves another €16.34. The 4-day German Rail Pass costs €92.67 more than the cheapest option.
If you want to take any train
| Option | Total |
|---|---|
| German Rail Pass Flexi, 4 days German Rail Pass €254 + City day tickets €30.30 | €284.30 |
| Trial BahnCard 50 + Flexpreis Trial BahnCard 50 €76.90 + Flexpreis −50% €159.15 + Regional trains (singles −50%) €34 + City day tickets €30.30 | €300.35 |
| Trial BahnCard 25 + Flexpreis Trial BahnCard 25 €19.90 + Flexpreis −25% €238.73 + Regional trains (singles −25%) €34 + City day tickets €30.30 | €322.93 |
| No card: Flexpreis ICE/IC Flexpreis €318.30 + Regional trains €34 + City day tickets €30.30 | €382.60 |
With Flexpreis tickets the picture flips: the German Rail Pass is €16.05 cheaper than the next flexible option, a trial BahnCard 50. The pass total leaves out the castle bus from Füssen (€6 return), which the Bayern-Ticket covers and the pass does not.
Rules of thumb
- Count your long journeys. If you will book each ICE ahead, the pass rarely pays: the cheapest saver fares we saw ranged from €17.99 to €102.99.
- If you want flexibility, compare the pass with the Flexpreis: Berlin–Munich alone was €163.90–€172.20 on our dates, so two long Flexpreis trips already cost more than a 3- or 4-day pass.
- Add a Deutschland-Ticket to the pass only if you will use a lot of city transport in one calendar month: the pass does not cover U-Bahn, trams or buses.
- Under 28? The Youth pass (€167 for 3 days) changes the maths in the pass's favour.
