Interlaken: which pass for the Jungfrau Region?

Prices last checked: · Prices from Jungfrau Railways, BLS, Switzerland Tourism and SBB, valid to 12 December 2026

Short answer: From Interlaken, the valley trains to Lauterbrunnen, Grindelwald, Wengen and Mürren are free with the Swiss Travel Pass and half price with the Half Fare Card. The mountain tops (Harder Kulm, First, Schynige Platte) are 50% off with either card, and Jungfraujoch is cheapest with the Half Fare Card. In our 4-day summer example with Jungfraujoch, First, Harder Kulm and Mürren, the Half Fare Card on its own was cheapest (CHF 455), just ahead of the Jungfrau Travel Pass (CHF 470). The Swiss Travel Pass (CHF 558.60) only pays off if you add long train journeys elsewhere in Switzerland.

Jungfrau Railways price list 14 Dec 2025 – 12 Dec 2026, summer prices (1 May – 31 Oct 2026); Jungfraujoch from the Jungfrau Railways price calculator. With the Swiss Travel Pass, the train to Grindelwald or Wilderswil is free and the mountain section (Grindelwald – First, Wilderswil – Schynige Platte, the Harder funicular) is half price. The Jungfrau Travel Pass needs a connecting ticket from Eigergletscher to Jungfraujoch (CHF 89 in summer). A Swiss Travel Pass Flex works only on an activated day.

From 1 November to 12 December 2026 the low-season prices apply: Harder Kulm CHF 38, Interlaken – First CHF 95.60, Jungfraujoch CHF 224.40. The valley trains cost the same all year.

The two regional passes

Jungfrau Travel Pass

Prices 14 Dec 2025 – 12 Dec 2026. *Reduced for holders of a Half Fare Card (Halbtax or Swiss Half Fare Card), GA, Swiss Travel Pass or a validated Swiss Travel Pass Flex day. Children 6–15: CHF 30. An extra day costs CHF 45 (CHF 35 reduced) at staffed Jungfrau Railways counters.

Berner Oberland Pass

Covers a much larger area: most trains and buses between Bern, Lucerne, Montreux and Brig, the Lake Thun and Lake Brienz boats and more than 25 mountain railways. Not every mountain railway is free with it: in the Jungfrau Railways price calculator, for example, Harder Kulm costs the same with the Berner Oberland Pass as with a Half Fare Card. Check the official area-of-validity map before you rely on it. 2nd-class prices for 2026:

The Berner Oberland Pass makes sense if you are touring the whole region (Thun, Brienz, Kandersteg, Gstaad and so on) rather than staying in the Jungfrau valleys.

Which is cheapest for 4 days in Interlaken?

Example, summer, adult, 2nd class. Day 1: Zürich HB → Interlaken Ost, Harder Kulm in the evening. Day 2: Jungfraujoch. Day 3: Grindelwald-First. Day 4: Mürren, then back to Zürich HB.

OptionTotal
Half Fare Card (CHF 150) + half-price ticketsCHF 455
Jungfrau Travel Pass 4 days (CHF 235) + connecting ticket + full-fare train from ZurichCHF 470
Half Fare Card + reduced Jungfrau Travel Pass 4 days (CHF 180) + connecting ticketCHF 492
Swiss Travel Pass 4 days (CHF 309) + mountain discountsCHF 558.60
No cardCHF 600
Our arithmetic from the prices above. Zürich HB – Interlaken Ost flexible fare CHF 73 each way (CHF 36.50 with the Half Fare Card); Supersaver tickets can be cheaper. The Half Fare Card is valid for a month, so it also halves the rest of your Swiss trip.

Why the Swiss Travel Pass loses here: it is free only on the valley trains, which are cheap, while the expensive parts (Jungfraujoch, First, Harder Kulm) are discounted no more than with the Half Fare Card, and on Jungfraujoch less. The Jungfrau Travel Pass gets better with more mountain days: add Schynige Platte (CHF 75.60) and Kleine Scheidegg to the same four days and it overtakes the Half Fare Card. Buying the Half Fare Card and a reduced Jungfrau Travel Pass together (CHF 492 here) costs CHF 22 more than the Jungfrau Travel Pass alone. It pays off once your other train tickets that month would cost more than about CHF 44 at full price. The Swiss Travel Pass gets better the more long train journeys you add before or after Interlaken (Zermatt, Lucerne, the Glacier Express). See the Jungfraujoch price guide for the Jungfraujoch options alone, and try your own trip in the calculator.
